When Hazel got up the next morning, Becky was already in the parlor. She looked as pretty as she had the day before, and today she was dressed in a light blue dress that really made the color of her eyes look vibrant and she had her hair up but with long curls hanging down in back. She really was a beautiful young woman.

“Good morning, Becky. How did you sleep?”

Becky smiled and it made her even prettier. “Very well. Thank you and your husband, Hazel for allowing me to stay here. I’m sure once I see John I’ll be out of your way soon. Was that them coming back last night not long after I went to bed?”

“You’re not in our way, Becky.” Hazel told her. “And yes, he’s back. He told Heath he would be up for breakfast.” Greta suddenly appeared then, and Hazel said, “Speaking of, it looks like it’s ready. I’ll go get Heath.”

“Mr. Lee has already told him, Miss Hazel.” Greta told her.

“Oh good then. Thank you, Greta. Are you ready to eat, Becky?”

“Yes,” the other woman said, “Thank you.” she pushed her own chair using the wheels and followed Hazel to the dining room. Greta had already moved one of the chairs and made a spot for her chair at the table. Hazel sat down in her usual spot and then a few minutes later, Heath came in.

“Good morning.” he told Hazel with a kiss on the cheek. “Good morning, Becky.”

“Good morning, Mr. Key.” she said.

Heath smiled and said, “Please, call me Heath.” Greta brought them in a pot of tea and one of coffee and a pitcher of fresh squeezed orange juice.

She said, “I saw Mr. John walking up to the house. I’ll have Cook serve the meal in just a moment after he gets in and seated.”

“Thank you, Greta.” Heath told her. He glanced at Becky; he could tell she was nervous. Then, he glanced at his wife. She looked as nervous as Becky. This should be really interesting. He was having that thought as John walked in.

“Good morning.” John said, looking first at Heath and then at Hazel. Then he turned his attentions to Becky. “Hello, Becky. It’s nice to finally meet you.” he said. Becky looked up at him, and to her credit she rolled her chair away from the table and turned it so she was facing him.

She lit up the room with a bright smile and said,

“I’m so happy to meet you, John.”

John took her hand and kissed the back of it. “Welcome to Texas.” he said. Then he sat in the spot next to her and said, “What’s for breakfast, I’m starving?”

Heath and Hazel looked at each other. They were both wondering if the gunshot had caused some type of damage to his head.
